Google+ Prepares to Revolutionize the Local Landscape

In the half year since its launch, Google has acquired 90 million users, opened brand pages and integrated with third-party social-media management systems.

But there’s something massive that Google could be doing with business pages that would transform the online business space.  If the Google information on each of those business’s pages, complete with address, phone number, photos and customer reviews, were put into a Google+ page, Google+ could become a local-business powerhouse.

The benefit of a fused Google+Place page to the social-media manager is obvious: maintaining one page beats maintaining two. Continually updated, the page would benefit the local user as an authoritative source of information about the place.

The fused page would be engaging, with photos uploaded by users and the manager alike, along with user reviews and comments. In addition, we would find conversations occurring between business owner and customers in a consolidated place.

Social Sign-On Is Consumers Choice

As retailers and other websites consider the appropriate degree of integration between their sites and social networks like Facebook and Twitter, social sign-on can be a valuable tool.

Internet users who might otherwise be reluctant to input their personal data over and over again across sites may be more willing to share that information if offered a less annoyingly repetitive way to do so, like through social sign-on.

Sites that offer such a tool may find they better engage and convert visitors into customers.

Social login platform Janrain has reported in the past on users’ reluctance to register for each new site they want to buy from. The company’s 2011 research found that 88% of online buyers had at some point intentionally left registration information blank or used incorrect information when signing up for a new account at a website, up 12 percentage points from 2010.

The 10 Ds of Creating a Social Media Use Policy

There’s been no shortage of news these days about companies getting in trouble because of what they or a third-party marketers have done when taking to the socially-powered airwaves.

If you’re confused about why your company needs a social media use policy, read “Social Media and Your Company’s Acceptable Use Policy.” If you’re gearing up to create a social media use policy of your own, here are ten steps:

1. Define “social media” clearly.
2. Distinguish between “guidelines” and “policy.”
3. Document your goals and strategies.

4. Differentiate between utilities.
5. Describe what’s allowed.
6. Delineate roles. Make it clear who is authorized to speak on behalf of the company and who isn’t.
7. Disclosures are a must.
8. Detail disciplinary procedures.
9. Disseminate the policy.
10. Do your due diligence. By sending your final draft of the policy document to your attorney, you’ll help ensure that your policies do not land you in the crosshairs of the NLRB for unfair labor practices.

Facebook Timeline Now Pushed To Everyone

Facebook’s biggest user interface overhaul since the Wall, the Facebook Timeline, is now becoming mandatory for all users. Over the next few weeks, everyone will get the new Timeline. And here’s the important part: when you do, you’ll have just seven days to preview what’s there now, and hide anything you don’t want others to see.

In case you’re unfamiliar here are some details:

- The Facebook Timeline makes it far easier for you to travel back through your Facebook posts – posts which normally disappeared off your Wall and into oblivion.

- The posts from these previous months and years are now accessible through new navigational elements on the right-side of your screen that let you quickly travel back in time.

- You can fill in data from your pre-Facebook years.
