The Year in Facebook Advertising 2012

InsideFacebook shared a rundown of major advertising-related innovations and changes Facebook made this year.

News Feed and Mobile Ads

Facebook previously allowed feed-based ads in 2007 but it had never shown ads on mobile devices until this year. Now, the social network is earning $4 million a day from News Feed ads, with three-fourths of that from the mobile feed.

Facebook Exchange

In June, Facebook announced its Facebook Exchange, an advertising system that allows third-party platforms to place retargeting ads on the social network after users visit external websites marked with cookies.

Custom Audiences

Facebook’s Custom Audiences feature enables advertisers to use their CRM data and apply it to social advertising. Advertisers can use Power Editor or the Ads API to upload files of email addresses, phone numbers or user IDs, which Facebook will hash and then match with its own hashed database. Ads can be targeted to the matches.

3 Ways to Grow an Instagram Community

Is your business effectively using Instagram?  Socialmediaexaminer shares three tips on how to strengthen your community management efforts on Instagram.

#1: Use Tools to Manage Your Account: Instagram’s interface, whether on mobile or web, doesn’t offer the best options for brands to effectively engage with their community.

#2: Respond to Comments to Grow Your Community:  The most important thing you can do for your Instagram community is to remain active, engaged and provide value by responding to comments.

#3: Use Hashtags to Track Engagement Over Time:  Hashtags are an often-overlooked way to monitor and measure the growth of your community over time. Similar to their use on Twitter and Google+, hashtags help aggregate photos of a particular subject based on the words used in the hashtag.  It’s important to look at the number of photos being uploaded about your brand to measure its growth over time, as well as your audience’s impression of your business.

Foursquare Adds Recommendations from Facebook Friends to its Explore Feature

AllFacebook reports that Location-based mobile application Foursquare launched its counterpunch to Facebook’s new, improved nearby tab on its mobile applications, which was announced earlier this week, with its addition of recommendations from Facebook friends to its explore options.

Foursquare and Facebook are both mindful of the fact that their users are more likely to trust recommendations when they come from people they already trust, as in, their friends.

In addition to seeing nearby places where their friends had checked in, Facebook users who access the nearby tab on their mobile apps can now:

  • Search nearby businesses by specific categories.
  • Connect directly to businesses via their mobile phones.
  • Rate places via a five-star system.
  • Share recommendations with friends.

Update Overload Remains Brands’ Biggest Social Danger

eMarketer shares that research has been fairly steady on why consumers sometimes choose to un-friend brands. Research by SocialVibe found one-third of US internet users who had ended a social connection with a brand did so because the company simply posted too many updates.

Update overload is subjective; it can be difficult for brands to gauge how often is too often. Many web users told SocialVibe that they checked for brand updates on social media fairly frequently: 17% said they did so every day, while another 23% did so at least once a week. Marketers can be confident that a steady stream of updates is appreciated by many users, but flooding social timelines with posts remains a danger.
