Foursquare New Local Updates

Some users are more interested in knowing what their favorite businesses are up to when they’re not there, rather than when they’re already checked in.

Foursquare’s new Local Updates is just for them. The feature, launching today, lets your favorite businesses send you text, photo, or specials updates that clue you into what they’re offering, even when you’re not physically there. So if you’ve liked a business on Foursquare or checked into one several times, you’re considered a loyal customer, and will automatically start receiving their updates. True to its namesake, Local Updates only lets merchants push specials at you when you’re nearby and thus reasonably able to swing a visit.

Foursquare Says Farewell to Google Maps

Foursquare is parting ways with Google Maps in favor of crowdsourced maps created by the OpenStreetMap project.

Foursquare announced the change in a blog post Wednesday, explaining its decision to make the big API switch. To power the new maps, Foursquare is partnering with MapBox, a startup which calls itself “a beautiful alternative to Google Maps” and uses data from OpenStreetMap.

“As a startup, we also often think about how we can make life easier for other startups,” the Foursquare blog explains.

Foursquare says it chose MapBox for three reasons:

- its use of OpenStreetMap, which will continue to get better

- it allows for design flexibility, so Foursquare can pick fonts and colors to match the rest of the app

- it’s powered by the open-source Leaflet java script library.

Will Foursquare Survive?

Foursquare launched a website redesign in November that made the app more compelling by increasing map size, and making check-in’s a more social experience. With the rise of the GPS enabled phone, Foursquare has the possibility to take advantage of this quickly increasing market.

It has recently reached 15 million users, 1 billion check-ins, 600,000 merchants on its site, and 170 million API calls per day. These are some impressive stats, but we have yet to see the financial value of the check-in. Retailers have had mixed results when they have launched location-based campaigns in collaboration with the site. The most important challenge to Foursqare will be making it a viable commercial application.

Foursquare In Context

If you’re a regular user of services like Twitter or Foursquare, you’ve undoubtedly been met with skeptics and naysayers who wonder aloud, “Why would I want to tell anyone what I’m having for lunch?” or “Why would I care if someone is having a ham sandwich?”

Fair enough, but the inquisitors fail to take into account the all-important factor in any conversation, whether it’s in person or online: context.

This new video helps to put Foursquare’s services into perspective for people who wonder “What’s the value of  ’checking in’?”

Foursquare Launches Personalized Search

Foursquare is introducing what it calls “personalized search for the real world” on its recently redesigned website. What that means as a practical matter is the introduction of the “Explore” feature, better keyword search and several new filters that enable users to drill down in search results. We can now, without hesitation, now call Foursquare a “local search engine.”

New Foursquare Features Include:

- An Explore button or tab in the upper right on the website. It’s obviously been on the mobile app for some time but not on the site until today.

- “Tips” content is now searchable, so obscure or very specific information can be discovered in results.

- New Explore filters and features that will engage users and reward them for greater participation.

Five Foursquare Tactics to Attract Customers

Foursquare recently passed one billion check-ins. For businesses of any type — but especially for retailers — Foursquare allows brands to attract, reward, and engage customers in ways that were never possible before. Innovative retailers are leveraging the growing popularity of check-ins to create fun, meaningful, interactions that encourage long-term loyalty. Here are five ways to use Foursquare to build loyalty this holiday season and beyond:

foursquare1. Offer creative, compelling specials.

2. Recognize the “mayor.” Foursquare has exploded in popularity partly because it adds a gaming layer to the location-based service.

3. Encourage a flash mob. Foursquare offers up to seven different types of merchant specials. Most merchants stick with the simplest–check-in and get something in return. Branch out. Offer a “flash” special from time to time.

4. Give Incentives for people to do good.

5. Have fun. Foursquare is, by definition, playful. Don’t take your campaign too seriously.

2012 Trends: Checking In and Out

Mobile marketers are setting their sights on using these devices like smartphones and tablets to influence transactions. This represents an evolution of the mindset of getting the consumer in the door. Broadly, this is a cultural shift from check-ins to checkouts.

While many mobile users have taken advantage of their device’s ability to connect location with useful information, comparatively few ever caught on to the check-in trend. Pew Internet & American Life Project found that while 58% of smartphone users had used some kind of location-based service on their phone, just 12% had checked in somewhere.

Smartphone owners are becoming more interested in deals. Interest in Location-based mobile offers had increased from 40% of smartphone owners in 2008 to 54% of smartphone owners in 2011.

Foursquare Redesign Creates New Opportunities For Users and Advertisers

Once upon a time Foursquare was a mobile app that allowed you to “check in” places and tell your friends you were there.  Foursquare has since evolved into a local discovery tool and loyalty platform for businesses.  It’s no longer simply a mobile app either. The redesign makes Foursquare.com a much more interesting and useful place to explore.

Changes to Foursquare.com:

- A large map on the homepage (once you’re signed in) and a range of places/lists to discover.

- The map shows everything interesting nearby – your friends, places that are trending, and more.

- Users can plan and make decisions in advance of their arrival.

What this means for advertisers: For advertisers to influence your decisions they need time.  With Foursquare as a planning tool it enables advertisers to inject themselves into that process and make offers or expose users to their pitches.
