Tumblr’s New Lookup Page

Popular blogging platform Tumblr has quietly introduced a minor, but notable new feature: a better way to find contacts through your other social networking services or Gmail. On the page available at Tumblr.com/lookup you can now connect your Gmail, Twitter and/or Facebook accounts to find all your friends’ Tumblr blogs.

It appears that the option to remove yourself from social discovery is opt-out. While Tumblr doesn’t appear to have made an official announcement on this new feature yet, the company did tweet about the addition yesterday.

Tumblr Sees Rapid Growth and New Advertising Opportunities

Tumblr is experiencing a growth spurt—and now brands may be able to capitalize on it.

Tumblr founder and CEO Dave Karp, who was once adamant about not leaning on advertising for monetization, announced at the Ad Age Digital conference on April 18, 2012, that the platform would introduce new ad units for sale on the site’s “Radar” post, which is where Tumblr highlights popular and selected content.

Tumblr is heavy on consumer engagement. According to a February report from comScore, web users worldwide who visited Tumblr spent, on average, 89 minutes on the site during January 2012.

Tumblr’s New Storyboard Project

Aiming to help curate the site’s vast array of content, Tumblr has launched a new initiative called Storyboard, billed as “tales from behind the dashboard.”

The micro-blogging platform and social networking website will be posting regular features from those within the Tumblr community with an interesting story to tell. Whether it’s highlighting content from writers and musicians to animators, scientists and comedians, Storyboard will highlight one new story each day and become a hub for in-depth conversations within its community.

Tumblr is looking for submissions, as well. If you’re interested in submitting a story or idea, you can post it on Tumblr with the hashtag #storyboard.

Tumblr is now joining the Facebook Timeline integration bandwagon.

Tumblr posts now appear on your Facebook Timeline, News Feed and Ticker when you chose “send to Facebook.” Tumblr likes and replies will appear on Facebook, as well.

Tumblr users can adjust their blog settings to share posts on their Timelines.

Why Few Brands Are on Tumblr

Tumblr seems to have all the makings of the next big thing but has yet to see the kind of rush of brands that Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare saw at far smaller scale.

Tumblr IconTumblr faces a mix of challenges, first, the nature of Tumblr itself is a challenge. It offers an experience that is somewhere between blogging and Facebooking or Tweeting.  An “interest network” sounds appealing but what exactly does that mean to a mega-brand like Coke?

Why isn’t the most famous brand in the world, which has over 36 million Facebook fans, using Tumblr? For that matter, the most social brands in the world like Starbucks, Red Bull and Pepsi are all missing from this platform.

Because of Tumblr’s mix of social, blogging and visual aspects, it takes a certain amount of time and creative energy for a brand to figure out its content strategy for Tumblr; and that may not be something that all brands are willing to do, or that all brands are even well-suited for.
