Twitter Rolls Out Expanded Brand Pages for More Companies

Twitter has started rolling out its enhanced brand pages to more advertisers.

The social networking site — which announced in December that it would be introducing Facebook-style brand pages for companies to customize and highlight content — has extended the platform to more companies.

Although brands with enhanced profile pages will have access to uploading banners and promoting tweets at the top of their Twitter timeline, it’s up to account owners to use and make the most of the functionality.

Some companies are already making the most of their brand pages. In fact, launch partners HP and Intel hosted the first-ever live stream of a concert on Twitter with electronic music master Tiësto during the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Which Countries Are Most Engaged On Twitter?

It stands to reason that the United States, the birth-country of Twitter, would be the number one in terms of users. And it is. By far. But new stats have been unveiled that suggest that numbers don’t mean everything, and that the US is actually behind the Netherlands (and two other countries) in terms of how often they tweet.

The US is the leader in terms of sheer numbers.  This means that the US represents 28.1 percent of all Twitter users.

As the chart below depicts, the Netherlands is the most active country on Twitter. 33 percent of accounts located in the Netherlands posted at least one publicly visible tweet between September 1st 2011 and November 30th 2011.

Twitter, LinkedIn to See Solid Ad Revenue Growth

Twitter, which is continuing to roll out self-serve ad offerings, will see growth in ad revenues around the world taper off over the next three years yet remain solidly positive. By 2014, eMarketer estimates, Twitter will enjoy worldwide ad revenues of $540 million.

Currently, 90% of Twitter’s revenues come from US sources, with other countries contributing just $26 million to its ad revenues this year. The site will have diversified its revenue sources slightly by 2014, but 83% of dollars will still come from the US.

LinkedIn, which has lower revenues and a lower growth rate overall than Twitter, gets a greater share of its ad dollars from outside the US.

Tweets Must Still Flow

One year ago, Twitter posted “The Tweets Must Flow,” in which they said,

“The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact … almost every country in the world agrees that freedom of expression is a human right. Many countries also agree that freedom of expression carries with it responsibilities and has limits.”

Twitter LogoTwitter has stated that as they grow internationally, they may enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some which for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content.

Now, Twitter has the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country — while keeping it available in the rest of the world. This is built in a way to communicate transparently to users when content is withheld, and why.

McDonalds Twitter Campaign Goes Wrong

A twitter campaign by McDonald’s backfired when people started sharing the wrong kind of #McDStories

McDonald’s kicked things off on Thursday with the hashtag #MeetTheFarmers, in a campaign meant to draw attention to the brand’s guarantee of fresh produce.

Later in the day, however, the burger company used a dangerously vague hashtag #McDstories which people used negatively.

The Daily Mail gathered some of the replies:

Marketers Follow Users To More Social Sites

Social media sites beyond Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are seeing significant boosts in usage, both in the US and elsewhere in the world. And where users go, marketers will follow.

Research from Awareness Inc. indicates US marketers plan to do just that this year.

The December 2011 survey found that the leading area for new social media marketing investments in 2012 would be increasing marketer presence across platforms, cited by 70% of respondents.

For some marketers, that will mean a new presence on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. While the vast majority of US marketers already use these sites for marketing, some laggards plan to join them there this year.

Social Media Accounts and Conversations On The Rise

Companies often have several different accounts or pages on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. As these accounts and the interactions with customers on social media increase, program managers must learn to balance the influx and continue to interact with fans.

The Altimeter Group surveyed social media program managers in Q2 2011 and found:

- On average, companies owned 178 total social media accounts, not including individual employee accounts.

- This includes an average of 39.2 Twitter accounts, 31.9 blogs and 29.9 Facebook accounts.

Challenges this causes for companies:

- Harder to oversee and manage that many accounts throughout the enterprise

- Managing the increase in customer conversations taking place on these various platforms, as users turn more often to social media for brand connections

Walgreens Using Paid Social Media to Promote Prescription Plan

Walgreens is using “sponsored conversations” – promoted Tweets, trends and paid bloggers – to influence customers to switch to its namesake pharmacy benefits plan.

The reason for the push is that the pharmacy chain was unable to come to terms with former pharmacy benefit manager, Express Scripts, and fears losing customers to Wal-Mart and CVS, both of which still have relationships with the company, says AdAge.

Along with promoted tweets it also paid Twitter to feature “#ILoveWalgreens” as a promoted trend.

Not only that, Walgreens hired Social Spark, a company that matches bloggers with advertisers for a percentage of the fee, to get some mommy bloggers writing about the issue in hopes of turning the tide in its favor.
